Belt Pretensioners eliminate any slack in the event of a crash. They do this using a pyrotechnic device which is triggered by the same sensors which actuate the deployment of airbags. However, in minor collisions the belt pretensioners may be activated without the airbags. The mechanism is usually fitted to the belt buckle area of the sea belt. When a collision occurs a pyrotechnic charge is ignited and gas is produced. The gas then moves a piston which pulls the belt buckle tight.
Belt Pretensioners are also found on the shoulder belt and work in a similar way. This time the gas produced is used to drive a turbine which tightens the seat belt. This device insures that the occupants of the vehicle are held strongly in their seats during a collision. Shortly after the gas is released and the seat belt loosens which prevents any chest or waist injuries.
